Top Bashers of Indian Bowling

This is short list of batsmen who have made merry against Indian bowling. Although I have given some statistics, they were not the criteria because some other batsman have better records. This is a purely based on my memories.

5. Saeed Anwar

A Pakistani must be there and he makes an entry at No.5. The elegant left-hander has smashed more than 2000 runs in 50 ODI games against India , the most painful 194 being scored in one fine innings in Chennai. Both his Test and ODI highest scores are against India.  He is only number 5 because he used to get one big score followed by a few poor ones.

4.Sanath Jayasuriya

He tormented Indian new ball bowlers for more than a decade and his innings in the group stages of the 1996 World Cup influenced India to field first in the semi-final on a pitch that was expected to turn a mile in the 2nd innings. He smashed 340 runs over 3 days as Sri Lanka amassed 950 runs in a Test match. He also leathered 189 runs in an ODI in Sharjah in a match India were bowled out for 54.

3. Matthew Hayden

This  man was dropped out of the Australian team and resurrected his career against India. One of the few Australians who have a better record against India in India than in Australia. In the famous 2001 Test series he piled on more than 500 runs .He continued his merry run even after that series making 1888 runs in 18 Tests. The image that comes to my mind when I think of Hayden is that giant front foot stride coming out and the sweep that follows hitting the ball to anywhere from fine leg to long-on.

2.Andy Flower

If Hayden killed Indian spinners with the conventional sweep, this mam tortured them with the reverse sweep. When someone plays that shot, as a fan you think he is playing a high risk  game and may get out soon. But, not with Andy. I have never seen anyone play it better or make it look so easy.  He once swept his way to more than 400 runs in a 2-Test series . Just to add insult to injury he has helped England whitewash an Indian Team with Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman.

1. Shivnarine Chanderpaul

It was a close fight between Chanders and Andy, but Chanders has beaten Andy with the way in which he scored the runs. Andy Flower would often play gorgeous drives and beautiful flicks that you can enjoy if you appreciate beautiful batting .But there is not a single run from Chanderpaul that is pleasing on the eye. He shuffles across the stumps and shovels, prods, pushes  and nudges. The fact that his batting is so ugly and he bats for so long makes him Number One Indian bowling Basher in my mind.

P.S: Hats off to you if you realized the fact that all these batsmen are left-handers.
